Got Dreams? It’s Time!

Each of us possess an untapped potential within to have, do, be, see, and give anything that we want – anytime that we want.  So why then do some people seem to have it all, while others are struggling to get by?

I theorize that it comes down to 6 fundamental reasons:

  1. We don’t have a definitive purpose/aim/goal/dream and a burning desire for its achievement, so we spend our energy talking about what we don’t want.  Since energy always attracts like energy, we continue to get more of what we “don’t want” in our lives.
  2. We are addicted to our habits, excuses, and fears and are held back by them or even paralyzed by them.
  3. We believe the good opinion of others regarding our ability to achieve more than we believe in ourselves and our ability to achieve – leaving us to feel alone and unsupported.
  4. We don’t feel worthy or deserving of it based on our past experiences, prejudgments, and fixed beliefs.
  5. We don’t want it bad enough or have a burning desire for it or we would already have it or have a scheduled plan for it.
  6. We don’t like change and we don’t want to give something up for very long, so we revert back to our comfortable ways as soon as the pressure is off and go back to the path of least resistance.

People CONSTANTLY say to me “You are lucky to be able to pick up and go around the world”, “You are lucky to live in Hawaii”, “You are lucky to have written a book”, “You are lucky to get 100 days of vacation a year” and “You are lucky to be able to work from home and do what you want when you want”. Well I have news for you; there is no luck about it!

I wasn’t born with a lucky horseshoe around my shoulders or a silver spoon in my mouth. I decided what I wanted my life to be. I made a plan, I put it into consistent motion and I made it happen.

I believe we are the sum total of our thoughts and what we think about, we bring about, so I choose to think big thoughts and I choose to focus on big results. Further, I set goals every week and pay a fine to charity for each goal I do not achieve.

I have an accountability partner who I check-in with weekly, a vision board in my office, and read my “I AM” and Mission statements on a daily basis. I keep my eye on my vision and focus on the end point and reward myself for my accomplishments.

For example, my dream was to author books that impact and inspire. Before I ever even wrote a single word of each of them, I printed out the cover and glued it to a book-sized piece of pine board and set it on my dresser so I could see the finished product every night before bed and when I first awoke. I spoke the words daily for a year “I am an Author who touches people’s lives and inspires them into motion.”

You see, the book was already a finished product in my mind and I was already an author – even though a single word on a page hadn’t been written. It is simply a matter of shifting your thinking to focusing on the results and outcome instead of the obstacles and fear.  My reward after 88 rejections from publishers and driving to NYC and holding up a sign on a busy corner that said “Please Help Me Publish My Book!”: A summer sailing through Greece, Turkey, Italy and France. That is the power of intention!

MY personal “Dreams” list below is not open for your judgement nor is it meant to impress you It is meant to inspire you into action to create your own list, get your creative juices flowing and stretch imagination into what is possible.

Life turns on a dime. And we are only here for an 80 year dream, if we are lucky. How much more time are you going to waste not having what you want to have, seeing what you want to see, being what you want to be, doing what you want to do, and giving what you want to give?

Tomorrow was never promised to you…take the step today! Imagine where you can be in one year from today or in five years, for that matter – if you just take the step. In truth, one step at a time is never too difficult!

Going after a dream may not be fast and it may not be easy, but I promise you – it will be worth it! Today is the day to start. Where you are is the perfect place to begin… So write it down…what do you want to SEE? BE? DO? HAVE? GIVE? Make your own list or purchase my “Dreams Can”. Once your list is complete, pick the one that matters to you the most or randomly choose one. Mark it on your calendar, start your savings account, and set it into consistent motion.

Life begins today!  Come on, what’s your dream?  It’s Time!

Stand on a busy corner & give away free hugs (Salt Lake City 2010)

Dance in the pouring rain

Fly a kite

Watch the Changing of the Guard At Buckingham Palace

Visit the ancient ruins of Rome

Name a star in honor of a loved one

Mush a dog sled in Alaska or see an Iditarod (saw the dogs training in Alaska)

Milk a cow

Raise chickens for eggs

Visit the Top Ten US Lighthouses

Visit all 7 continents (North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, Antarctica)

Float through the heavens in a hot air balloon at sunrise or sunset

Go to the top of the Empire State Building (2006)

Ice Skate in Rockefeller Plaza

Visit a NYC firehouse & ask them how 9/11 changed them (2006)

Kiss the Blarney Stone in Ireland

Visit the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington

Visit Alcatraz

Camp in the Serengeti & see the “BIG 5”

Visit the place where Gandhi took his final footsteps and say a prayer for peace

Volunteer at Mother Teresa’s Orphanage in Calcutta, India

Leave a flower & a tear where Princess Diana died or find her gravesite (2007)

Trek through the Rwandan jungle and see wild gorillas

Cuddle a baby lion cub
